Liverpool open talks over shock deal while fears grow two stars could turn backs on Klopp

Liverpool open talks over shock deal while fears grow two stars could turn backs on Klopp

There is still a chance that Adrian San Miguel could sign a new contract with Liverpool, a report has revealed.

Adrian is due to become a free agent at the end of the season when his contract expires. However, when Liverpool announced they would be releasing James Milner, Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the summer, Adrian’s name was not mentioned.

And according to Football Insider, talks are underway for a deal that would allow Adrian to continue his career with Liverpool.

That’s despite the veteran goalkeeper failing to make an appearance for the club since the Community Shield win over Manchester City back in July. His last Premier League appearance came over two years ago, back in February 2021.

Adrian has since been usurped by Caoimhin Kelleher as Liverpool’s main backup goalkeeper, behind first-choice Alisson Becker.

However, Kelleher is expected to pursue a departure from Liverpool this summer so he can become another club’s main goalkeeper instead. There have been claims that Tottenham could be his next takers, but he is attracting other interest too.

Football Insider has hinted that Adrian could similarly turn down Liverpool’s renewal offer so he can see out his career with more gametime at another destination, most likely at a lower level.

That said, a chance remains that the 36-year-old could put pen to paper on another short-term deal so he can stay on Merseyside, offering his support to Klopp’s preferred shot-stoppers.

Liverpool looking to add to goalkeeping department

Even in that case, it would remain likely that Liverpool would be in the market for a replacement for Kelleher. The report mentions Ron-Robert Zieler from Hannover as one alternative who could come into the fold.

Zieler is 34 years old, so could also bring his own experience to the goalkeeping department.

The third-choice goalkeeper at Liverpool could still be Adrian next season, though. It should soon become clearer whether or not he will find an agreement to continue at Liverpool.

Formerly with Real Betis and West Ham, the Spaniard has represented Liverpool in 26 official matches since joining the club in 2019. In those games, he has conceded 36 goals, otherwise keeping seven clean sheets.

It might raise some eyebrows if Liverpool were to reward Adrian with a new deal when they have decided to let go of players like Firmino and Milner.

But in those cases, it would have been harder to stand in the way of outfield players who still feel they have plenty to offer on the pitch. As for Adrian, it might be more about his off-field characteristics.

Therefore, talks are ongoing as to whether or not he will stick around at Liverpool.
